Crumb by Crumb – Finding Our Way Through The Maze

Navigating around the Chechney Institue of Research site, it appeared that the majority of the links were either broken or lead to a white page with the name of a numbered image called “crumb”

eg: <img src=”images/crumb1.jpg>

No less than 12 links around the site gave details of 12 different crumbs, which when entered as URLs gave the following (reproduced here for easy access):

  1. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb1.jpg
  2. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb2.jpg
  3. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb3.jpg
  4. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb4.jpg

  11. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb11.jpg
  12. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb12.jpg

Each featuring the picture of a mouse (entitled “r33p.jpg”) and a part of a riddle of some sort which I will reproduce below in it’s entirity rather than posting endless screenshots:

i’m not a one trick pony. i can do many things. i can scream & i can count & i can write spreadsheets.

i told you i could count, but what does that mean? cut off your pinky & maybe then you’ll see.

we tell tales & we say our goodbyes. we bring joy & we tell lies. we’re right in front of you, literally, right before your eyes.

i said we told lies, but this time we’ll tell the truth: there’s a distance you must count ere you reach the end, my dear sleuth.

we go this way / & this way / & this way / & this way / & this way \ & this way & this way again / &, did you guess? this way /

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon

i live next door to naegele’s rule

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough

Players soon started to piece together information about each aspect of the riddle and found that many lines had an association with numbers. Each line is reproduced below with observations made about each – many thanks to everyone on the UNfiction forum for their hard work:

i’m not a one trick pony. i can do many things. i can scream & i can count & i can write spreadsheets.

After much debate, this was cleverly deciphered to mean a computer, and more specifically a computer keyboard

i told you i could count, but what does that mean? cut off your pinky & maybe then you’ll see.

The number 9? Since cutting of your pinky leaves you with 9 fingers

we tell tales & we say our goodbyes. we bring joy & we tell lies. we’re right in front of you, literally, right before your eyes.

This would fit with the computer theory – right in front of our eyes!

i said we told lies, but this time we’ll tell the truth: there’s a distance you must count ere you reach the end, my dear sleuth.

Obviously going to be some counting of distances to solve the puzzle

we go this way / & this way / & this way / & this way / & this way \ & this way / & this way again / &, did you guess? this way /

This could be read as ‘directions through the maze’ – Right, right, right, right, left, right, right, right. But starting from where?

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon

Players found references from this line to the TV show ‘The Prisoner’ whose main character was also known as ‘Number 6

i live next door to naegele’s rule

Naegele’s Rule was a formula used to calculate the length of a woman’s pregnancy – 9 months

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim

The first 9 days of the Hebrew month of AV are known as Tisha HaYamim or “The Nine Days”

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way

King Solomon states in Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A three-ply cord is not easily severed.”

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way

This was found to be the * key on the keypad

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough

This was found to be the $ key on the keypad

ALL of this was cleverly put together by DarrellEW who definitely desreves the supersleuth award for this particular puzzle – genius work! His final solution is given below:

“ok, so i just solved the puzzle… here’s how:

first off, i realized that it was obviously talking about the keyboard… but then i quickly realized that keys are not laid out vertically or horizontally… which is where the directions “/” and “\” come into play

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon (6)
so i had to move in this direction / from the number 6 and thus got the letter “f”

i live next door to naegele’s rule (9) / i

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim (9) / n

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way (3) / a

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way (*) \ l

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor (9) / i
*THIS ONE WAS IN REFERENCE TO THE SECOND CLUE “i live next door…”, “neighbor”)

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough ($) / s

it took me a second to get the last clue, but it made so much sense once i figured it out

this led me to the URL: http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/finalis.html

Well done DarrellEW!

So it seems that the ChenchyInstitute may be the ‘competitors’ to the Widmore Group in bidding for location G and that the energys being played with have the potential for catastrophic effects. References are also made to ‘108’ (the button in the swan had to be pressed every 108 minutes) and to mirrors of some sort.

Dedicated players are already working hard to figure out the numbers, already translating them as:

20 8 5 – 15 9 20 20 9 – 6 1 14 9 12 24
T  H E – O  I T  T  I   F A N  I L  X

which could perhaps be read as

20 8 5 – 14 9 20 20 9 – 6 1 13 9 12 25
T  H E – N  I T  T  I   F A M  I L  Y

with deliberate spelling mistakes, as there’s a Francisco Nitti listed on the staff page at Chenchey.

It’s moving fast people so keep watching this space!

R33pich33p Throws Us A Crumb…Or Twelve

After many hours drowning in letters and slowly descending into an anagram induced madness, I for one was VERY relieved yesterday when R33pich33p decided to take pity on us poor hopeless puzzlers and give us a hint. That’s the problem with this linear type of puzzle presentation – once you reach a dead end you’re stuck!

A text to Elliott from the mouse himself gave us this: (eventually! After corrections!!)

Elliott’s tweet: Got a text from someone calling themselves ‘r33pich33p.’ Anyone know what “c-e—e- / – n–itu-e / -f / –s-a—“ means?

Hurray! With 27 characters in all, our string of 27 letters will fit perfectly into this framework.

With a good team effort on the UNfiction forum (which you must follow for all our puzzle solving work in action!), we came up with:

Chenchey Institute Of Research

(props to seriousm for coming up with the name ‘Chenchey’!)

A bit of digging uncovered the fact the Chenchey Institute of Research did exist already as part of the LOST world, featuring heavily in the video game Lost: Via Domus, in which it was involved in dangerous and harmful experimentation into ESP using lethal Serin Gas.

While most of us missed the obvious, trying URLs at the 8th Spoke etc, seriousm came up trumps again, managing to see the wood for trees and finding:

http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/

LOTS of fun info here!

“We are proud to announce the opening of a new facility in Ponta Delgada in the A.R. of Azores” for starters! Plus projects on “Electromagnetism” and connections to the Hanso Foundation and the Enzo Valenzetti Endowment for Scientific Research all show we were on the right track!

N.B.

Just have to say that I think maybe I can take some credit for R33pich33p throwing us an extra clue – about 5 minutes before his text to Elliott I had sent him a bit of a grumpy email, in my frustration, saying that if he REALLY wanted to help us then he had to give us something decent to work with! I think I even mentioned throwing us a bone, or some cheese! So when the ‘crumbs’ popped up later I really had to smile with them definitely being CHEESE crumbs not bread in my mind!! Apologies and thanks to R33pich33p for helping us out – a true gentleman!

However, looking back it seems ‘someone’ may have been reaching out to give us a clue in our confusion. Steff recalled a post on the WISH? blog comments page that read (emphasis is mine):

“Lurkyloo Says:

Some words I see in there..

the

i theta
search

chain

Will post if i see anything else”

Maybe we should have taken ‘Lurkyloo’ a bit more seriously!! Think we better keep our eyes open for more mysterious comments from unknown players in the future… especially when we’re really stuck!

Off Topic… Porridgebrain has a moan!

Ok, while it’s quiet, these things are annoying/troubling me at the moment…

1. What the hell was the astrolabe all about. It was such an intriguing image and concept based on such a cool idea (a prehistoric computer?!). Yet it’s gone no-where since.

2. Why has Simeon Hobbes stopped tweeting?

3. What did the disappearing countdown’s on the 27 site mean? And is anything going to happen to those 22 blank pages? WHERE/WHAT ARE THE OTHER 5?! (because surely there must be 27 pages in all?)

4. WHY why WHY is my computer still not letting me access the above?! Beginning to get paranoid that ‘someone’ has blocked my IP access to the site!!

5. Why, when Aidoneus told us not to investigate I.Theta, is the path he placed our feet on leading us there and no-where else?

6. When are The 8th Spoke going to put something on their events page? I check it everyday and it’s bugging me!

7. WHO is Aidoneus and why is he helping us. I, for one, don’t trust him, but will follow where he leads for now.

8. What’s with all the frickin’ anagrams?!! I have completely reached my anagram saturation  point after battling with this latest clue all day!!

9. Most importantly – WHERE IS THE PHEONIX?! And how can we find him?

Any more anyone? Any more loose ends/questions that are playing on your mind? I’ll add them on!!

A Hex From The Mouse And Other News

Both myself and anne_wintermute received emails back from r33pich33p last night (although I was a little late to the party – waking up to check my email about 6 hours AFTER all the action!)

In both replies, R33pach33p says he doesn’t know where Niel is (or Nathan for that matter) but that he knows a lot about I. Theta.  Included in both replies is the same code, 27 pairs of numbers and letters:
47 57 66 56 27 e6 27 86 56 96 36 56 56 e6 86 56 16 36 37 37 96 97 36 f6 86 47 47

Player Steff discovered that by reversing each pair of numbers you get a hex code ( also known as hexidecimal, or base-16 code)

74 75 66 65 72 6e 72 68 65 69 36 65 65 6e 68 65 61 63 73 73 69 79 63 6f 68 74 74

which translated gives us the letters:

tufernrheiceenheacssiycohtt

Time to get our anagraming hats back on? I can see a co.cc in there so maybe another URL?

In other news, tweets and a blog post by Elliott tell us that he’s going to be away for most of this week so won’t be rummaging through any more of Nathan’s papers before the weekend.

So looks like we’re stuck with what r33pach33p chooses to throw us for now. Hopefully we’ll crack this next clue soon and it won’t be too quiet a week!

A Threat Or A Warning? The Hunt for the Mouse Begins…

After trying every URL connected with every Greek Mythological Sea Deity under the sun, Anne_Wintermute proved her puzzle prowess once again by finally finding Niel’s missing page. The word we had been searching for was PISCES!

http://nielheisenberg.fh50.com/pisces.html

Here Niel reveals his joke with the red herring and reports a worrying experience of being followed. His involvement in I.Theta is confirmed as he specualtes on it’s connection to the shocking infomation he overheard.

Lastly a link to an email received on the 8th May may explain Niel’s disappearance – a new character on the scene that goes by the name of  ‘r33pich33p’ hints both at knowing significant information about Niel and his involvement in I.Theta, and warns Niel that he is in danger.

The tone of the email is both vaguely threatening yet obviously intends to warn Niel, making the intentions of ‘r33pich33p’ ambiguous at best. An email address provides a point of contact and many players have emailed in the hope of further contact with this new entity.

‘r33pich33p’ or Reepicheep is, of course, the famous swash-buckling mouse from C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, explaining the name of the email link page ‘mouse’.

So all roads seem to be pointing back to I.Theta. Which is funny because this was the ONE topic that Aidoneus warned us away from him. Yet it his intel that lead Elliott to Nathan’s papers and us to here.

I don’t know about you but I’m beginning to wonder about his intentions…

Another Lost Soul

It’s been a quiet couple of days with fans beginning to get a bit antsy, going over old clues and beginning to worry that maybe Elliott had gone the way of his brother and disappeared. But a new blog entry last night put our worries to rest and us firmly back in the game.

A letter of Nathan’s gave us a new name and new information on St Ignace:

St Ignace

The land based map marker points to, you guessed it, St Ignace, Michigan and players Env420 and Amandeercalculated the seemingly sea-based map point to correspond with the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

The name ‘Niel Heisenberg’ and his mention of the website LinkedIn led us to his profile at the same site and from there to his personal website and blog.

And so it seems Nathan isn’t the only person working on this project to have disappeared: a comment on Niel’s blog from his daughter Sara dated 30th May tells us he has been missing for weeks – most likely since shortly after his last blog entry of 4th May in which he reports overhearing something at a business meeting that deeply disturbed him.

Both the letter and Niel’s blog talk once again about ‘competitors’ to the procurement of Location G, which seems to be in St Ignace. Are the 8th Spoke the competitors bidding on the site? We certainly know that they have an interest in the site after collecting ground samples there.

Players began to study Niel’s website for clues and Kalyn quickly noticed

“Niel’s Random page is everything he likes A-Z (obviously) and he mentions his son’s name, John, his daughter’s name, Sara, and his mother’s name, Mary. But his list is missing the letter L and he never mentions his wife’s name (Loretta)”

Searching for possible URLs that used Loretta’s name led  J4a8s15s16o23n42 to the image page http://nielheisenberg.fh50.com/images/loretta.gif and this image:

loretta

So a red herring?! Or is there more to find here…?

Env420 decided to respond to Sara’s comment and managed to initiate a conversation with Sara regarding her father’s disappearance. She had little new information to add, never having heard of The 8th Spoke, ‘The Law’, the St. Ignace site, Simeon Hobbes OR much about her father’s business dealings, but did mention that his blog had previously held a ‘list of worries’ on his personal page that had been taken down.

Sara seemed reluctant to pry too deep into her father’s personal and private records but seemed open to us investigating further, suggesting we see if the page that her father removed from his website was still there under a different name. She suggested using things he had an interest in:

-mythology (of the mediterranean variety)
-fishing
-sailing
-maybe a combination of all three?

So far nobody has come up with an answer, but hopefully playing around with different URLs based on information in the site and Sara’s suggestions will soon give us what we’re looking for.

Sens Does Some Digging

Whilst waiting for the next update from Elliott today, Sens did some detective work on the ‘whois’ service of the co.cc site to find out who http://twentyseven.co.cc was registered to and came up with these details:

Edmund Montgomery

48109-2122
Ann Arbor, MI
UNITED STATES

The 8th Spoke
Email : the8thspoke@gmail.com
Phone : (734) 764-1817
Instant messenger :

Updated Date : 20-May-2009
Creation Date : 20-May-2009

For those of you that don’t remember (I didn’t!), Dr. Edward Montgomery was a guest speaker at the 8th Spoke Rememberance Day Service – so twentyseven.co.cc is an 8th Spoke site and NOT one belonging to Aidoneus as other players had speculated!

Further digging found that Edward Montgomary and the same details are also regsitered to the8thspoke.co.cc site.

Definitely a name to look out for then! Could HE be Aidoneus’ ‘man on the inside’? Or perhaps this is one of the aliases that Aidoneus mentioned?

ElysiumEludes found Edward Montgomery to be a historical figure, remembered for being both biologist and philosopher, and as she pointed out “If these people are taking aliases, then scientific names would make sense”.

The number, by the way, looks to be the main line for the University of Michigan, so probably not worth a call!!

The site isn’t working for me this morning but thanks to amandel at the unfiction forum I can now give you a screen shot of the twentyseven.co.cc page

original_27_co_cc_images

The first ‘I’ acts as a link to the page http://twentyseven.co.cc/aleph.htm and additional information in the source code reveals the names of the other two numeral images ‘U2’ and ‘U3’:

<center><a href=”aleph.htm”><img src=”images/a1.jpg” BORDER=0></img></a> <img src=”images/u2.jpg”></img> <img src=”images/u3.jpg”></img></center>

‘Aleph’ being the first letter in the Hebrew Alphabet, players began trying Hebrew letters as URLs and between them managed to come up with one for every letter. That is, once the spelling had been agreed upon! It seems there are different possible spellings for each letter but using this wiki guide gave a result for all 22 letters.

Thanks to sdishman/dishboy for this comprehensive list:
http://twentyseven.co.cc/aleph.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/bet.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/gimel.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/dalet.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/he.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/waw.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/zayin.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/heth.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/teth.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/yodh.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/kaph.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/lamedh.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/mem.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/nun.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/samekh.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/ayin.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/pe.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/tsade.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/qoph.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/resh.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/shin.htm
http://twentyseven.co.cc/taw.htm

Players checking each address found nothing but a blank page with no further clues hidden in the source code.

THAT IS except ElysiumEludes and Gary! When the clicked on the ‘qoph’ page they were both greeted with some sort of countdown! Why the rest of the players couldn’t view this is a mystery – it seemed to quickly disappear when players tried to access it so our only conclusion is that it was taken down quickly before too many players could see it.

The weirdest thing of all is that both players report seeing a different amount of time counting down, with one countdown due to end at 10pm on the 28th (today), the other at 10pm on the 29th (tomorrow), both EST. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of it!!

A further mystery was revealed when players noticed that the second two image names of the Roman Numerals on the twentyseven.co.cc page had changed while they had been finding the Hebrew Alphabet pages to ‘ 5tamuz’ and ‘6av’, with the source code now reading:

<center><a href=”aleph.htm”><img src=”images/a1.jpg” BORDER=0></img></a> <img src=”images/5tamuz.jpg”></img> <img src=”images/6av.jpg”></img></center>

Sdishman/dishboy found these to be the names of months in the Hebrew Calender with Gary finding that 5th Tamuz and 6th Av corresponded to nothing less than 27th June and 27th July!

Significant dates… but what does it mean? And where do we go from here? Why is the twentyseven site full of blank pages? Have we got ahead of ourselves again?

Elliott has promised us another blog entry today. Fingers crossed he’s found something in Nathan’s papers!

Please Leave Your SECRET Message After The Tone…

So it seems Elliott received a mysterious telephone callyesterday at 7.27am (which just happened to be May 27th btw!), saving it to his blog for us to have a listen to.

Deciding that it MUST be significant somehow, players set to work at trying to decode it’s hidden meaning.

Figuring out that the tones heard must correspond to numbers on a phone, @tgosnell worked out the ‘message’ to be:

9*369*839362622

After playing aroundwith possible letter equivalents to the numbers given on a phone key pad but getting no where, @EmPuLSe suggested that maybe the * symbols represented a multiplication sign equating as:

9 x 369 x 839362622 = 2787523267662

and sure enough that led ARGonut to the first new URL of the night: http://the8thspoke.co.cc/2787523267662

Another blank page on first observation – but again on closer inspection players found another clue hidden in the Source Code:

/-1 / -1 / – / – / -1 / -1 / -1 / – / -1 / – / – / – / – /

13 ‘entries’ – corresponding to the 13 numbers of the URL?

A good team effort by LOSTFAN88 and Riddle quickly cracked this one too – by subtracting 1  key on a phone keypad from each of the numbers corresponding to a -1 in the new sequence, a new number was calculated:

9 -1 key = 8
* -1 key = 9
9 -1 key = 8
* -1 key = 9
8 -1 key = 7
9 -1 key = 8                         Giving= 893689738362622

Players had already speculated earlier in the night that when typed into a phone the end numbers 2622 converted to co.cc leading to the possibility of a new web address. Working with this new number Riddle found that this was now indeed the case, with the rest of the numbers transcribing to the words ‘twentyseven’:

http://twentyseven.co.cc

*NOTE* I have repeatedly tried to access this URL this morning with no success, getting only an Internal Server Error message. Hopefully it’s just a temporary fault – I’ll keep trying.

Still more to come! Be back in a bit…

A Reward – And Some Good News From Aidoneus

The ‘Aletheia’ page gave us the following message from Aidoneus – it seems our hard work had finally impressed him and we were to be rewarded…with information!

aletheia

A faked death, a cover-up, and suspicious field work carried out in St. Ignace, Michigan, home of the ‘Mystery Spot’, a strange area of land that seems to defy the laws of Physics.

And the best news of all? NATHAN’S ALIVE!!

Now it’s up to Elliott to detirmine our next move. Maybe Nathan’s papers can point the way forward?
