Crumb by Crumb – Finding Our Way Through The Maze

Navigating around the Chechney Institue of Research site, it appeared that the majority of the links were either broken or lead to a white page with the name of a numbered image called “crumb”

eg: <img src=”images/crumb1.jpg>

No less than 12 links around the site gave details of 12 different crumbs, which when entered as URLs gave the following (reproduced here for easy access):

  1. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb1.jpg
  2. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb2.jpg
  3. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb3.jpg

  11. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb11.jpg
  12. http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/images/crumb12.jpg

Each featuring the picture of a mouse (entitled “r33p.jpg”) and a part of a riddle of some sort which I will reproduce below in it’s entirity rather than posting endless screenshots:

i’m not a one trick pony. i can do many things. i can scream & i can count & i can write spreadsheets.

i told you i could count, but what does that mean? cut off your pinky & maybe then you’ll see.

we tell tales & we say our goodbyes. we bring joy & we tell lies. we’re right in front of you, literally, right before your eyes.

i said we told lies, but this time we’ll tell the truth: there’s a distance you must count ere you reach the end, my dear sleuth.

we go this way / & this way / & this way / & this way / & this way \ & this way & this way again / &, did you guess? this way /

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon

i live next door to naegele’s rule

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough

Players soon started to piece together information about each aspect of the riddle and found that many lines had an association with numbers. Each line is reproduced below with observations made about each – many thanks to everyone on the UNfiction forum for their hard work:

i’m not a one trick pony. i can do many things. i can scream & i can count & i can write spreadsheets.

After much debate, this was cleverly deciphered to mean a computer, and more specifically a computer keyboard

i told you i could count, but what does that mean? cut off your pinky & maybe then you’ll see.

The number 9? Since cutting of your pinky leaves you with 9 fingers

we tell tales & we say our goodbyes. we bring joy & we tell lies. we’re right in front of you, literally, right before your eyes.

This would fit with the computer theory – right in front of our eyes!

i said we told lies, but this time we’ll tell the truth: there’s a distance you must count ere you reach the end, my dear sleuth.

Obviously going to be some counting of distances to solve the puzzle

we go this way / & this way / & this way / & this way / & this way \ & this way / & this way again / &, did you guess? this way /

This could be read as ‘directions through the maze’ – Right, right, right, right, left, right, right, right. But starting from where?

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon

Players found references from this line to the TV show ‘The Prisoner’ whose main character was also known as ‘Number 6

i live next door to naegele’s rule

Naegele’s Rule was a formula used to calculate the length of a woman’s pregnancy – 9 months

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim

The first 9 days of the Hebrew month of AV are known as Tisha HaYamim or “The Nine Days”

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way

King Solomon states in Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A three-ply cord is not easily severed.”

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way

This was found to be the * key on the keypad

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough

This was found to be the $ key on the keypad

ALL of this was cleverly put together by DarrellEW who definitely desreves the supersleuth award for this particular puzzle – genius work! His final solution is given below:

“ok, so i just solved the puzzle… here’s how:

first off, i realized that it was obviously talking about the keyboard… but then i quickly realized that keys are not laid out vertically or horizontally… which is where the directions “/” and “\” come into play

only one thing lies between me & the man in the village with the weather balloon (6)
so i had to move in this direction / from the number 6 and thus got the letter “f”

i live next door to naegele’s rule (9) / i

i face two obstacles on my way to Tisha HaYamim (9) / n

i’m so close to the -ply cord, but i can’t even begin to sever it while this one thing is in my way (3) / a

i could touch the stars, but one thing stands in my way (*) \ l

you’ve already seen me before, but i still have the same neighbor (9) / i
*THIS ONE WAS IN REFERENCE TO THE SECOND CLUE “i live next door…”, “neighbor”)

if i could get just one thing out of the way, i’d be able to count the dough ($) / s

it took me a second to get the last clue, but it made so much sense once i figured it out

this led me to the URL: http://www.chencheyinstituteofresearch.com/finalis.html

Well done DarrellEW!

So it seems that the ChenchyInstitute may be the ‘competitors’ to the Widmore Group in bidding for location G and that the energys being played with have the potential for catastrophic effects. References are also made to ‘108’ (the button in the swan had to be pressed every 108 minutes) and to mirrors of some sort.

Dedicated players are already working hard to figure out the numbers, already translating them as:

20 8 5 – 15 9 20 20 9 – 6 1 14 9 12 24
T  H E – O  I T  T  I   F A N  I L  X

which could perhaps be read as

20 8 5 – 14 9 20 20 9 – 6 1 13 9 12 25
T  H E – N  I T  T  I   F A M  I L  Y

with deliberate spelling mistakes, as there’s a Francisco Nitti listed on the staff page at Chenchey.

It’s moving fast people so keep watching this space!

  1. So why do the links for Oleg Nosovi and Luis Soto take you nowhere?

    • Good question. Nothing is done by accident so it must mean something…

      • Yes… it must…

      • Any ideas?

Is the significance in the names somehow do you think? They struck me as odd…

  2. Hi!
I was just thinking to the phrase left by our Reepacheep: “”there’s more at stake here than you think”.

I think it can refer to the image itself, since the background is quite disturbed (as with a Gaussian color noise). I’ll try to examine the picture.
